Is the KraftGeek JustTap worth it? If you film on your phone and you film alone, yes. In this KraftGeek JustTap review I used the JustTap Magnetic Phone Tripod for days as my main phone tripod, and it fixed the hardest part of being a solo creator: getting the shot with nobody behind the camera. The only real limit is that it's built for phones, not a DSLR.
KraftGeek sent me the JustTap to test. The full video is above.
What is the KraftGeek JustTap?
It's a selfie stick and tripod in one, built for phones with MagSafe. You tap it and the legs open and it stands up on its own. Your phone snaps onto a magnetic mount. A Bluetooth remote hides in the handle.
I film every video I make solo. No camera operator, no crew. That's the problem this thing is built for.
What I liked
It actually stands up with one tap. It fits in the water bottle pocket of my bag. I pull it out, tap it, and it's standing. That's what makes filming anywhere realistic, because setup takes seconds.
The MagSafe mount. The phone snaps on and off. The magnet holds 2.5 kg, which is about 5 lb. Per KraftGeek's product page, that's 5.5 lbs with N52 magnets, and it works with MagSafe phones or phones with a metal ring or metal ring case.
The hidden remote. It pops out of the handle. Hold the button until it flashes green, then pair it in your phone's Bluetooth settings like any other device. Mine connected instantly. It works from 33 feet away, so you can take selfies, start and stop video, and get B-roll from across a room. Every solo shot in my video was done this way.
The angles. The mount rotates and the neck tilts, so you can go vertical, horizontal, or point it straight down for overhead unboxing shots. Most phone tripods I've used can't do that drop-down angle. KraftGeek's page lists it as 180° neck tilt and 360° phone rotation.
It's light and it survived me. It weighs 455 g. I dropped it about five times myself and it still works perfectly.
The specs
- Weight: 455 g (I said this in the video, and it matches the product page)
- Magnet hold: 2.5 kg
- Remote range: 33 ft
- Max height: 66 inches, and it folds down to about 13 inches, per KraftGeek's product page
- Remote battery: 50 mAh, rated for 20,000 presses, per the same page
One note on drop testing. In the video I said it's been drop tested over a thousand times. KraftGeek's product page currently says over 10,000. Either way, my five drops did nothing to it.
What I didn't like
Honestly, my one wish is that it could hold my DSLR. I recorded the review itself on a DSLR, and this tripod is so easy to use that I wanted it for the big camera too. It isn't built for that. It's a phone tripod.
What I didn't test: heavy phones in thick non-magnetic cases, filming outside in wind, and how the remote battery holds up over months. I used it for days, not a year.
Who should buy the KraftGeek JustTap?
- Solo creators who film on a phone and need to set up anywhere, fast
- Anyone shooting unboxings who wants an overhead angle without a second stand
- People who travel light and want one thing that's a tripod and a selfie stick
If you shoot mostly on a camera, you need a real tripod for that, and this becomes a second tool rather than your main one.
KraftGeek JustTap review verdict: is it worth it?
The KraftGeek JustTap does what a solo phone creator needs: it stands up in one tap, holds the phone with a magnet, and lets you trigger the shot from 33 feet away. I kept reaching for it. If you're into solo filmmaking on your phone, this is the one I'd grab.
